The Brain Workout

Generally speaking, most of the advertising we see today in fitness marketing is predominantly aimed at our body shape - our physic. Get lean bodies, get sculptured bodies, get fit bodies, reduce body fat, get more toned, and every diet imaginable and pill to assist in that endeavour is thrust in our faces daily. Then in the same breath, following on from these adverts are moronic advertisements showing slim, active people, eating fat laden foods, drinking sugar-laden soft drinks and/or the latest beer or spirit in social settings. Ordering Uber Eats, can bring this smorgasbord to your home without you even leaving your arm chair, equating this with the epitome of convenience and living your best life. Yet it sits in opposition to everything that fitness and health experts tell us is good for us!

Sadly, brain health is rarely mentioned with the same vigour as body health and body shape is promoted. And yet our brains are responsible for running our lives, producing thoughts, determining behaviour, planning, evaluating, learning etc... Without our brains we are dead! There are no options for a brain transplant.

So, why do we hear so little about how to foster brain health? The reality is that working out our brain is as crucial as working out our body. Each part of our brain is responsible for some action and when negatively impacted either through injury, poor nutrition, legal or illicit substance use, our brain will underperform and evidence damage in various regions of the brain. Underperforming brains start to evidence deterioration in both short - and long-term memory. This is often a warning sign. The brain is shouting out to us 'please take care of me, I am struggling, I need your help!'

If your brain is asking you for help, some activates below are great brain workouts to enhance brain functioning. The inclusion of brain foods such as leafy green vegetables, berries, dark chocolate, and fish etc... along with any of the following vitamins such as Omega-3, Magnesium, Vitamin D, B-complex, and L-theanine can also be helpful in elevating brain performance. The elimination of substances of dependence and toxic foods will further promote optimal functioning on all levels. Your brain and body will thank you!
